Abstract

In this study, bone grafts based on hydroxyapatite (HA), H3BO3, KH2PO4, and SiO2 with copper (Cu) and strontium (Sr) substitutions were synthesized using the sol-gel method. Different ratios of (CH3COO2)Cu.H2O (5–25 wt%) and SrCO3 (5–25 wt%) were used as additives in the production of the bone grafts. Morphological structure and antibacterial properties of the bone graft materials were investigated. The morphological effects of the bone grafts were examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Further, antibacterial experiments were performed on bone grafts dissolved in 0.1 and 0.5 µl concentrations. E. coli and S. aureus were used for these experiments. FTIR and XRD examinations revealed that the bone grafts exhibited amorphous structure and formed HA, ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP), CaSiO3, and CuO phase structures. In addition, in SEM image analysis, it was determined that liquid-phase sintering occurs in all copper- and strontium-containing bone grafts, and both liquid-phase sintering and grain size decrease as the amount of copper compound increases and SrCO3 decreases. Antibacterial experiments revealed that copper- and strontium-containing compounds do not show toxic effects, but rather increase cell viability.
